SOU'WESTER
outfitting
Our roots in the hunting industry were planted over 30 years ago in York Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador. What started as a small town husband and wife saving up for a single hunting lodge has grown into one of the longest standing Outfitting operations in the province. Sou’wester Outfitting operates three modern remote fly-in lodges on the island of Newfoundland and offers fully guided single or combination hunts for moose, Woodland Caribou and black bear for the big game hunting enthusiast. The lodges are among the most remote in Newfoundland and are situated in a wilderness and ecological reserve on the Buchans Plateau. The sites have healthy big game populations and offer the hunter the opportunity to take the animal of one’s choice and the potential of making that once-in-a-lifetime kill which may qualify for Boone and Crockett or Pope and Young recognition.

THE SOU'WESTER WAY
Big game hunting in canada
At Sou’wester we embrace the evolution of hunting to an increasingly competitive adventure sport with high performance tactical gear, but we also stay true to our small town roots and simple love of the hunt. For generations Newfoundlanders have made living off the land a way of life and enjoyed many hunting adventures wearing a simple flannel shirt and a pair of Dunlops. Sou’wester Outfitting is extremely proud to be able to offer its guests the unique opportunity to be guided and entertained by descendants of the courageous men who have shaped our history through fishing and hunting. These guides have continued the ways of their forefathers and have inherited and developed a prowess for big game hunting that is not easily matched.
Over the years Sou’wester Outfitting has earned a solid reputation for dependable hunts and the most enjoyable hunting that Newfoundland has to offer. It’s the promise of a world class hunt with experienced guides in Newfoundland’s unforgettable back country that makes us who we are and ensures that hunting with Sou’wester is an experience you won’t soon forget. Our guides and chefs consistently go above and beyond to ensure hunting with us is something you’ll want to do again and again. We encourage you to book your next hunt with us to discover for yourself what makes hunting the Sou’wester way so special.
SPOT & STALK
What to expect
All hunts offered through Sou’wester Outfitting are spot and stalk in nature. This method of hunting requires the hunter to hike the terrain while keeping a lookout for the quarry of one’s choice. Sou’wester Outfitting’s wilderness lodges are located at Caribou Lake, Little Lake and Indian Pond. The terrain in the immediate vicinity of the three lodges offers habitat for all three animals. While woodland caribou and black bear are mostly found and hunted in open areas, moose on the other hand enjoy a more wooded habitat. The terrain in which woodland caribou and bear are hunted is an open tundra-like setting with many knolls from which a vast amount of area can be surveyed. The terrain does offer sparse vegetation and this along with the features of the physical landscape offer optimal conditions for stalking game. The conditions are ideal for the ultimate rifle, bow or muzzleloader hunting experience. Although moose can be found anywhere throughout the area, most of the hunting takes place in the wooded areas where there are bogs and other open areas. Moose are often spotted at or near a tree line.
